Situated in South West Kenya, the Masai Mara is a large park reserve which is technically part of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania; it continues on from the Serengeti northwards. The name Masai Mara derives from the Mara River which runs through the middle and the Maasai people who are the traditional inhabitants of the area.

The Reserve is famous for its beautiful, breathtaking scenery along with its large population of game such as Zebra and Wildebeest which migrate from the Serengeti every year in July and August.  This migration is so vast that it is called the Great Migration.

Tourists can enjoy the reserve for around a $40 entry fee (as of April 2006) and can experience the beauty and wildlife of the park from either a rented cabin or in a tented campsite. Visitors and tourists are all expected to self cater when staying at the park unless this has been previously arranged with your agent. Read the rest »

Prepare for the road on your next vacation and save money on fuel costs!

Over long weekends and school holidays, South Africans always hit the highways and byways in great numbers. It is a known fact, that virtually two-thirds of travelers spend at least one-half of their vacation time traveling and sightseeing, driving to the beach, dropping off and collecting kids and friends from various venues. With all of this time behind the wheel and as petrol prices are continuously raising, people will be looking for ways to reduce how often they have to fill it up and also ways and means to avoid a breakdown along the road that would spoil the holiday fun, whether on the way to the beach or a vacation destination.

Where the car meets the roadgood place to start:
Check the tires. Make sure they are wearing evenly. If not, the suspension, wheel alignment or shock absorbers may need adjusting. Check the tire pressure. Match the load rate with the estimated weight of your family and the luggage youll bring on a long trip. To help prevent a costly breakdown and to increase fuel efficiency, have all fluids, filters, hoses and belts checked, and replaced if necessary, by professional technicians. Most manufacturers recommend changing the oil every 10 000 kilometers; make sure your estimated round-trip mileage doesnt exceed the reading indicated for the next oil change.

The draw to this wonderful park is the diversity of flora and fauna and the remote almost inaccessible forests. There are no roads in the park, you have to be prepared to do lots of hard hiking, and indeed this is a hikers paradise.

It is remarkable that these forests have remained untouched before they received National Park status. This is due largely to traditional taboos and beliefs that kept the local people from destroying and clearing these forests. There are important natural caves in the park which are of a significant cultural importance. There are many plant species found nowhere else in the world including over 160 medical plant varieties.

The Udzungwa hosts animals that are found in most Tanzanian parks including elephants, buffaloes, lion and leopard; also including the African wild dog, which is only found in Southern Tanzania. However, most of these are not present in large numbers and visitors will have a hard time spotting these game animals in this Park. A park ranger and/or guide must accompany all hikers.
